Deaf Education Teacher (Grades 9-12)

About the role

The Deaf Education Teacher for grades 9‑12 provides academic instruction that enables deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students to access the curriculum, focusing on language and communication skill development.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with district curriculum and accommodations for deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students.
• Conduct regular assessments, collaborate with general education teachers, and modify curricula according to Individual Education Plans (IEP).
• Communicate instruction in signed English, provide oral/aural emphasis, and ensure communication access at all times.
• Supervise teacher aides, interpreters, and volunteers; use instructional technology to enhance learning.
• Document student progress, participate in Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee, and sponsor extracurricular activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) and valid Texas teaching certificate in Deaf/Hard of Hearing (EC‑12) or equivalent.
• Knowledge of Deaf/Hard of Hearing instructional services, including auditory training, oral speech modeling, Visual Phonics, Total Communication, and use of amplification equipment.
• Ability to teach core academic subjects and manage student behavior.
• Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Total Communication and SEE sign language modalities.
• Use of Visual Phonics and maintenance of amplification equipment.
