Senior Associate

About the role

The client, a well‑established law firm in Kampala, seeks an experienced Senior Associate to support the Technology, Media, Telecoms, Intellectual Property & Sustainability practice. The role involves handling sophisticated legal and policy matters at the intersection of technology, IP, digital transformation, ESG, climate finance and carbon markets, while building client relationships and leading teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage complex TMT/IP, sustainability, ESG and carbon‑market assignments.
• Act as a trusted adviser and primary point of contact for clients.
• Draft and review legal opinions, agreements, policies, transaction documents and regulatory submissions.
• Advise technology companies, telecom operators, fintechs, digital platforms, carbon project developers and investors.
• Supervise Associates, junior lawyers, legal assistants and interns.
• Manage timelines, budgets, client expectations and conduct due diligence.
• Support regulatory applications, registrations, approvals and lead client trainings.
• Identify new business opportunities, lead pitches and build relationships with regulators and industry bodies.
• Publish thought‑leadership pieces, mentor junior staff and contribute to practice strategy and budgets.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from a recognised university and Diploma in Legal Practice.
• Admission to practise law in Uganda.
• At least five years of post‑qualification experience in TMT/IP, fintech, data protection, sustainability, ESG or carbon markets.
• Demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate technology, commercial and regulatory agreements.
• Experience managing significant client matters with limited supervision and mentoring junior lawyers.
• Strong commercial mindset, excellent written and verbal communication, and ability to engage senior executives and regulators.
