Climate and Food Security Specialist

About the role

The Climate and Food Security Specialist will support the development, implementation, and evaluation of climate‑adaptation strategies within DRC's Food Systems and Economic Self‑Reliance project in West Nile, Uganda. The role ensures high‑quality, timely delivery of interventions that enhance food and nutrition security and promote economic self‑reliance for refugees and host communities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and quality assurance across food systems, nutrition security, and economic self‑reliance interventions.
• Oversee climate‑smart and regenerative agriculture activities, including block/cluster farming, soil and water conservation, post‑harvest management, and farmer learning.
• Implement nutrition‑sensitive approaches such as kitchen gardening, permaculture, and nutrition education for vulnerable households.
• Guide market‑system interventions, including value‑chain development, aggregation, collective marketing, and linking farmer groups with off‑takers.
• Support financial inclusion initiatives, strengthening farmer groups, cooperatives, and SACCOs.
• Manage natural‑resource and ecosystem interventions like FMNR, agroforestry, and water‑for‑production schemes.
• Ensure gender equality and women’s empowerment are integrated across all project activities.

Required profile

• Relevant higher‑education degree in agriculture, environmental science, food security, or a related field.
• Proven experience in climate‑smart agriculture, food security, or livelihood programmes, preferably in humanitarian contexts.
• Strong understanding of nutrition‑sensitive agriculture and market‑system development.
• Ability to work collaboratively with project managers, MEAL teams, and external stakeholders.
