Construction Safety & Health Officer

About the role

The Construction Safety & Health Officer (CSHO) will provide expert guidance on safety and health matters across all phases of a construction project for OBO in Kampala. This full‑time position supports compliance with U.S. Department of State and Ugandan construction safety regulations throughout a 24‑month contract.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect and assess contractor safety programs on‑site, ensuring adherence to OBO safety and health requirements.
• Develop, implement, and manage the Injury/Illness Prevention Program in coordination with OBO, the General Contractor, and on‑site personnel.
• Conduct regular safety inspections of facilities, equipment, work practices, and safety devices; report findings and recommend corrective actions.
• Monitor contractor compliance through daily inspections and enforce cessation of work when imminent hazards are identified.
• Oversee sanitation and health inspections of mess facilities, toilets, and wash rooms, ensuring qualified personnel are designated.
• Apply procedures to eliminate hazardous conditions and advise on accident prevention.
• Validate and test emergency evacuation plans for fire or other emergencies.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years (84 months) of experience in construction safety and health.
• Senior‑level expertise with a strong understanding of U.S. Department of State and local construction safety regulations.
• Proven ability to lead safety inspections, develop prevention programs, and coordinate with multiple stakeholders.

Required skills

• Knowledge of construction safety regulations and standards.
• Experience developing and managing Injury/Illness Prevention Programs.

• Ability to design and evaluate emergency evacuation procedures.
