About the role

The Director Programmes role supports the design, delivery and evaluation of projects within the British Council’s Non‑Formal Education (NFE) portfolio in Uganda. It leads the development and implementation of the NFE strategy, ensuring alignment with global priorities and the achievement of both financial and non‑financial targets.

Key responsibilities

• Support the strategic ambition and framework for the NFE portfolio, aligning grant‑funded programmes with British Council and partner priorities.
• Lead the design and implementation of the NFE strategy for Uganda, ensuring coherence with global and cultural engagement plans.
• Provide operational management and leadership to the in‑country NFE team, driving successful development, delivery, impact and financial sustainability of a mixed portfolio of partnerships, programmes and contracts.
• Offer technical direction, resource planning and ensure high‑quality monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) across all projects.
• Foster a culture of evidence‑based delivery, shared practice and internal capacity building.

Required profile

• Proven experience in leading non‑formal education programmes or similar development initiatives.
• Strong operational and people‑management skills to oversee a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to align project design with strategic objectives and funder requirements.
• Experience managing mixed‑income portfolios and ensuring financial sustainability.
