Editorial Lead (Managing Editor)

About the role
We are seeking a committed, self‑driven Editorial Lead to manage our publications portfolio, ensuring accuracy, clarity and credibility while building East Africa’s first dedicated Data Protection Journal. This is a voluntary leadership role (8‑10 hours/week) reporting to the Head of Research, Training & Capacity Building.
Key responsibilities
- Lead editing and timely release of the East African Law Monthly newsletter.
- Manage the FARAGHA Magazine editorial pipeline, from theme setting to publication.
- Coordinate the annual East African Data Protection Guide, handling calls for contributions, editing, and final compilation.
- Establish the East African Data Protection Journal, developing editorial policy, submission guidelines, and peer‑review processes.
- Perform quality assurance on case commentaries, research briefs, and regulatory submissions before publication.
- Develop and maintain an editorial style guide, citation standards, and publishing calendar.
- Mentor contributors and provide constructive editorial feedback.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Journalism, Communications, Public Policy, IT or related field.
- Minimum 3 years experience in editing, legal or academic writing, research or publishing.
- Strong understanding of data protection and privacy law in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and global standards such as GDPR.
- Familiarity with academic publishing, peer review, and citation styles (e.g., OSCOLA, APA).
- Proven ability to coordinate multiple contributors and meet publication deadlines.
- Excellent written English with a sharp eye for detail and ability to simplify complex legal material.
- Self‑motivated, reliable and able to work independently.
