Postdoctoral Fellow – Landscape Ecology

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Landscape Ecology to join its research team in Kampala, Uganda. The fellow will provide scientific guidance, collaborate with thematic leaders, and contribute to high‑impact research on forest governance and natural resource management.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance ensuring research concepts and methods meet the highest scientific standards.
• Collaborate closely with theme coordinators within CIFOR to define and implement emerging research activities.
• Write, supervise, and disseminate scientific publications and other communications.
• Lead and supervise project capacity‑building initiatives and mentor junior scientists.
• Supervise students and staff, providing mentorship and oversight.
• Represent CIFOR in national, regional, and global forums related to forest governance.
• Develop and maintain constructive partnerships with stakeholders.
• Lead the search for additional funding and develop proposals in relevant research areas.
• Plan, monitor, and manage research activities, including budgeting and financing.
• Coordinate and contribute to donor reporting.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., ecology, environmental science, social science).
• Experience in collaborative natural resource management or social‑science research.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects across regions and continents.
• Successful track record in developing and managing research budgets.
• Strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Demonstrated experience in resource mobilization, fundraising, and proposal development.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Effective experience working with multiple partners and multidisciplinary teams in developing countries.
