Special Support English Teacher (Upper & Lower Primary)

About the role

Aga Khan Schools (AKS), U is a private, not-for-profit organisation providing quality and affordable education from Pre-School to High School, following the British National Curriculum, IGCSE, IBDP and the Uganda National Primary and Secondary curriculum. It is looking for a Special Support English Teacher to support a group of English Language Learners in improving their English skills, working with Upper and Lower Primary students.

Key responsibilities

• Review diagnostic assessments, student work and teacher reports to assess each learner's English proficiency.
• Develop tailored termly schemes of work, weekly and monthly planners, worksheets and learning plans for each session, using the domains of language learning and reading.
• Support identified students in class and in pull-out sessions so they can work competently with the UNEB curriculum alongside their class.
• Use e-learning tools to strengthen reading and English skills, after approval from the Head of Operations and Student Affairs.
• Monitor each child's progress daily and submit a weekly individual student progress report to the Head of Operations and Student Affairs.

Required profile

• University Bachelor's degree in Education with a specialisation in English, or a B.A. in another field with a recognised TEFL or TESOL qualification.
• At least 2 years of experience teaching English to non-native speakers; significant ESL/EAL experience is an advantage, especially with beginners.
• Experience working with refugees is an advantage.
• Empathetic, compassionate and patient teacher able to guide learners in their learning.
