Ancillary Assistant – Domestic Staff

About the role

The Ancillary Assistant will support the Chief Executive and Head of Domestic Services in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment at St. Margaret of Scotland Hospice. This full‑time permanent position is essential to delivering high‑quality care for patients and visitors.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine cleaning of wards, public areas, and storage spaces following strict infection‑control procedures.
• Lock and unlock secure storage for hazardous substances and manage movement of stock and furniture.
• Report equipment faults immediately and ensure all furnishings are kept presentable.
• Teach and empower other domestic staff on hygiene standards, proper storage of clothing, and clutter‑free environments.
• Maintain housekeeping equipment, record usage of cleaning substances, and carry out administrative tasks for the Housekeeping service.
• Monitor consumable usage, assist with performance standards, and attend mandatory training (e.g., Moving and Handling, Fire Safety).
• Support health and safety initiatives within the housekeeping department.

Required profile

• At least one year of cleaning or janitorial experience (required).
• Willingness to obtain or hold a PVG membership for working with vulnerable adults.
• Ability to work under the direction of senior management and act as a role model for the hospice.
• Commitment to follow all policies, procedures, and infection‑control guidelines.
