Barley Field Quality Controller

About the role

Our client, a fast‑growing Ugandan agribusiness, is seeking a self‑driven Barley Field Quality Controller to oversee barley quality at the buying centre. Reporting to the Agronomist, you will ensure that every lot meets strict grading, safety and traceability standards.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment (moisture meters, scales, sieves) and ensure proper calibration.
• Conduct definitive quality tests on incoming barley lots (moisture, test weight, foreign matter, varietal purity, visual defects).
• Make binding decisions to accept, reject or downgrade lots and authorize purchase prices according to SOPs.
• Generate accurate Weight and Quality Tickets that form the legal basis for farmer payments.
• Communicate grading decisions to farmers, resolve disputes and maintain transparent relationships.
• Maintain tamper‑proof records and a sample archive for full lot traceability.
• Train buying‑centre agents on sampling techniques and quality protocols.
• Enforce compliance with UNBS, GSP food‑safety standards and buyer‑specific requirements.
• Liaise with the warehouse team to ensure proper segregation, labeling and storage of accepted barley.

Required profile

• Diploma in Agriculture, Food Science & Technology, Chemistry, Biology or related field.
• Minimum 2 years hands‑on experience in grain quality control, laboratory analysis or procurement within a grain buying centre, warehouse or processing plant.
• Experience with barley or malt is a strong advantage.
• Certified proficiency in official grain grading standards.
• Unquestionable integrity, fairness and the ability to remain firm under pressure.
