Data Center Infrastructure Design Engineer

About the role

We are expanding our professional services team in Uganda and are looking for a Data Center Infrastructure Design Engineer to own the architecture and layout design of high‑availability facilities. The role covers end‑to‑end design planning, system integration, and capacity optimisation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop comprehensive physical architecture and spatial layouts in line with TIA‑942 and GB 50174 standards.
• Lead MEP engineering design, including UPS, power distribution, backup generators, HVAC, and airflow management.
• Produce detailed technical design packages: schematics, equipment specifications, Bills of Quantities and deployment proposals.
• Collaborate with architectural, fire‑protection and structural teams to resolve layout conflicts and manage load‑bearing requirements.
• Calculate long‑term power, climate‑control and connectivity needs to meet PUE targets and redundancy goals.
• Provide remote and on‑site technical oversight during site assessments, load testing, commissioning and implementation.

Required profile

• Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Automation engineering or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years experience designing large‑scale facilities or managing complex MEP projects, preferably for data centres with >1,000 racks.
• Deep knowledge of data‑center standards (TIA‑942, GB 50174, Uptime Institute Tier).
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit (BIM) and engineering calculation tools; CFD modelling is a plus.
• Familiarity with medium‑voltage generation, heavy‑duty UPS, high‑voltage DC distribution and advanced cooling (free and liquid cooling).
• Professional certifications (PE/CEng, Uptime Institute ATD, CDCP, LEED AP) are advantageous.
• Willingness to travel for site reviews and work under tight schedules.
