Deaf Education Teacher (Grades 7-8)

About the role

The Deaf Education Teacher for grades 7‑8 will deliver academic instruction to deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students, ensuring access to the curriculum and fostering language and communication development.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with district curriculum, incorporating accommodations for deaf learners.
• Provide instruction in signed English, oral/aural techniques, and Total Communication methods such as SEE sign language and Visual Phonics.
• Assess student progress regularly and document achievements in Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
• Collaborate with general education teachers, RDSPD staff, audiologists, and interpreters to modify curricula and support student needs.
• Supervise teacher aides, interpreters, and volunteers, and ensure appropriate use of amplification equipment.
• Participate in Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee meetings and contribute to extracurricular activities as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (Master’s preferred).
• Valid Texas teaching certificate in Deaf/Hard of Hearing (EC‑12) and Generalist TASC or equivalent.
• Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage classroom behavior and create a supportive learning environment.

Required skills

• Knowledge of auditory/listening skills training and oral speech modeling.
• Proficiency with Visual Phonics and SEE sign language modalities.
• Experience using amplification equipment and instructional technology.
• Ability to develop accommodations and modifications for IEPs.
