Project Coordinator – Clinical Trial & PhD Opportunity

About the role

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University is launching the RECENT TB study, a large‑scale randomized trial on secondary TB preventive therapy in Uganda and South Africa. The institute seeks a highly motivated Project Coordinator who will simultaneously enrol in a PhD programme, using trial data to develop a doctoral thesis.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee participant recruitment, randomisation and follow‑up in line with the protocol, GCP guidelines and EDCTP regulations.
• Ensure accurate data capture, entry and verification using electronic data capture systems.
• Train and coordinate study nurses, health‑facility staff and community health workers across both countries; travel to South Africa as required.
• Maintain up‑to‑date study documentation, including protocols, consent forms and data collection tools.
• Prepare study, safety and interim reports for the DSMB and EDCTP.
• Liaise with IDI’s Research and Ethics Committee and the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology to ensure compliance.
• Support monitoring visits, audits and inspections by regulatory bodies.
• Develop a PhD research concept, enrol in an approved programme and produce a full doctoral proposal in consultation with scientific leads.

Required profile

• University degree in a health‑related field or equivalent.
• Strong interest in clinical research and capacity to manage a multi‑site trial.
• Willingness to enrol in a PhD programme and complete a thesis within the contract period.
• Excellent organisational and communication skills.
