School Counsellor

About the role

Acorns International School (AIS) in Kampala is looking for a School Counsellor to provide individual, group and classroom-based counselling to students, and to support teachers and parents with the mental health and behavioural issues of children. The position is full time.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct individual and group counselling sessions covering personal, social, emotional and academic issues
• Collaborate with teachers and parents to support student learning and development
• Administer and interpret assessments to evaluate student behaviour and mental health
• Develop and run prevention and intervention programmes for mental health, bullying, substance abuse and other behavioural concerns
• Maintain accurate and confidential student records and reports
• Provide crisis intervention and support as needed
• Teach well-being and PSHE lessons and other lessons as assigned
• Attend and deliver professional development and training to improve counselling skills

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Counselling, Psychology or a related field; a Master's degree is an added advantage
• Certification as a School Counsellor or equivalent
• At least 2 years of experience as a School Counsellor or in a related field
• Experience in individual and group counselling with children and adolescents
• Experience working with children, preferably including children with special needs
• Knowledge of mental health and behavioural issues affecting youth
