Seasonal Program Assistant – Game Official (Referee)

About the role

The Essex County Parks and Recreation Department is seeking seasonal Program Assistants to serve as Game Officials (Referees) for various sports contests, including basketball and soccer. This part‑time position offers 5–10 hours per week on a year‑round basis, providing an opportunity to stay active in the community while applying knowledge of sport rules.

Key responsibilities

• Officiate scheduled basketball and soccer games according to official rulebooks.
• Maintain accurate game records and report any incidents to the department.
• Communicate game schedules and any changes to teams and participants.
• Assist with setting up and breaking down equipment as needed.

Required profile

• Knowledge of basketball and/or soccer rules and regulations.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Good physical fitness to keep up with game pace.
• Preference for prior playing experience, though not mandatory.

Required skills

• Understanding of sport-specific officiating guidelines.
