Senior Scientist - Biomass

About the role

World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is recruiting a Senior Scientist in Biomass for its CIFOR unit in Kampala, Uganda. The role provides scientific guidance, leads research activities and supervises publications, project capacity building and junior scientists.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance so that research concepts and methods meet high scientific standards and reflect current methods and concepts.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators and leaders within CIFOR to define and implement research in emerging interest areas.
• Write and supervise publications and other scientific communications.
• Lead and supervise project capacity-building initiatives.
• Supervise students and staff and mentor junior project scientists.
• Represent CIFOR, when appropriate, in national, regional and global forums on forest governance.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with stakeholders.
• Lead the search for additional funding in relevant research areas and lead or coordinate donor reporting.
• Plan and monitor research activities, including financing, as necessary.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline.
• Experience in collaborative natural resource management or social science research.
• Publications record, especially in peer-reviewed publications, is required.
• Demonstrated experience in resource mobilization and fundraising, and in proposal development and writing.
• Fluent spoken and written English; an international language is an advantage.
• Experience working with multiple partners and in multicultural, multidisciplinary research teams, including research and fieldwork in developing countries.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

More senior positions require the ability to manage projects simultaneously, expertise across regions and countries, and experience developing budgets. Scientist positions additionally require budget management success on multiple projects and conceptual leadership in fundraising, with a track record of securing donor funding for research proposals.
