Head of Legal

About the role

The Legal Head will define and drive Stanbic Bank Uganda’s legal strategy, providing expert counsel to senior management and safeguarding the bank’s interests while supporting sustainable growth and innovation.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and implementation of the Country Legal Strategy in line with Group standards.
• Advise Executive Management and governance bodies on complex, high‑value and strategic legal matters.
• Oversee identification, assessment and mitigation of legal, regulatory and reputational risks.
• Provide legal oversight for strategic, cross‑border transactions and major business initiatives.
• Draft, review, negotiate and interpret contracts, policies and other legal documents.
• Manage litigation, disputes and external counsel to protect the bank’s interests.
• Build and maintain relationships with regulators, industry bodies and external practitioners.
• Promote legal technology adoption and continuous improvement within the function.
• Lead, develop and mentor a high‑performing legal team.
• Control legal budgets and monitor external legal spend.

Required profile

• Postgraduate degree in Law from a recognised institution.
• Admission to practice law and relevant professional qualifications.
• Minimum 15 years of progressive legal experience, preferably in banking or financial services.
