Legal Head – Lead Country Legal Strategy

About the role

The Legal Head will steer Stanbic Bank Uganda’s legal function, defining and executing the country legal strategy in line with Group standards. Reporting to senior executive management, you will protect the bank’s interests while enabling growth and innovation across all business lines.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the Country Legal Strategy aligned with Group Legal policies and business objectives.
• Provide expert legal counsel to executive management, governance bodies and business leaders on high‑value, strategic matters.
• Oversee identification, assessment and mitigation of legal, regulatory and reputational risks.
• Lead legal oversight of complex, cross‑border transactions and strategic deals.
• Draft, review, negotiate and interpret legal agreements, policies and other documentation.
• Manage litigation, disputes and external counsel to safeguard the bank’s interests.
• Build and maintain relationships with regulators, industry bodies and external legal practitioners.
• Drive adoption of legal technology and continuous improvement within the function.
• Lead, develop and mentor a high‑performing legal team.
• Monitor legal budgets, external spend and governance compliance.

Required profile

• Postgraduate law degree from a recognised institution.
• Admission to practice law with relevant professional qualifications.
• Minimum 15 years post‑qualification experience, including at least 10 years managing legal risk in financial services.
• At least 5 years in a senior legal leadership or counsel role with exposure to wholesale and corporate transactions.
