Special Education Teacher Assistant

About the role

The Special Education Teacher Assistant works under the direct supervision of a certified special education teacher to support the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with diverse needs. This position provides instructional, supervisory, personal, assessment, and material management assistance within a classroom setting.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the teacher in delivering instruction aligned with each student’s IEP.
• Provide classroom management and supervision, ensuring a safe learning environment.
• Offer personal support, including feeding programs, sign/signal communication, and basic medical procedures such as gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, and diapering for adult‑size students.
• Support assessment activities and help prepare instructional materials.
• Maintain and organize educational resources and equipment.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; district in‑service training required after hiring.
• Basic knowledge of academic subjects and preferred substitution or equivalent experience.
• Future requirement: two years of post‑secondary education (48 semester hours), an associate’s degree, or passing a state‑approved para‑professional test.
• Ability to adapt support based on student needs and IEP specifications.
