Data Center Design Engineer

About the role

The Data Center Design Engineer develops, coordinates and oversees the design of data center infrastructure so that architectural, electrical, mechanical and low-voltage systems meet technical standards, operational requirements and project specifications. The role covers multidisciplinary design coordination, technical documentation, capacity planning and technical support during project implementation. The position is based in Uganda.

Key responsibilities

• Develop the overall architecture and layout of data centers, including zoning, space planning and building design, in line with TIA-942, GB 50174 and Uptime Institute Tier Standards.
• Lead or coordinate electrical systems (UPS, power distribution, generators), mechanical systems (HVAC, airflow, hot/cold aisles) and low-voltage systems (structured cabling, BMS, DCIM).
• Prepare construction drawings, equipment specifications, Bills of Quantities and technical proposals.
• Work with structural, fire protection and architectural teams on cable trays, load-bearing and fire compartmentalization issues, and take part in bid clarification meetings.
• Plan power, cooling and network capacity and redundancy (N+1, 2N) aligned with PUE targets.
• Take part in site surveys, commissioning and mock load testing, and support construction and design changes.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical/HVAC or Automation Engineering or a related field; professional registration or certifications are an added advantage.
• At least 5 years of experience in large-scale data center design or complex MEP projects; full-cycle projects with 1,000+ racks preferred.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, good cross-functional communication, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, willingness to travel and give on-site support.

Required skills

• TIA-942, GB 50174 and Uptime Institute Tier Standards knowledge, plus redundancy and PUE concepts.
• AutoCAD and Revit (BIM); electrical and HVAC design tools; CFD airflow simulation is an added advantage.
