Linux Devices Software Engineer (Hardware Certification)

About the role

Join Canonical’s global team to develop and certify Linux‑based software for the latest IoT and server hardware. You will work remotely from Kampala while collaborating with engineers worldwide to bring Ubuntu to new devices.

Key responsibilities

• Work with the latest Linux kernel and open‑source technologies.
• Deliver Ubuntu for IoT and server‑class platforms.
• Integrate and maintain device‑oriented software stacks.
• Write high‑quality, well‑designed code in C, C++, Go or Rust.
• Collaborate with globally distributed teams and external communities.
• Help customers ship their applications and SDKs on Ubuntu.
• Build device OS images using Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server.
• Optimize the kernel and libraries for silicon‑specific capabilities.
• Debug issues and produce robust fixes.
• Contribute to technical documentation and act as technical lead on complex customer engagements.

Required profile

• Exceptional academic record from high school and university.
• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM or a compelling alternative path.
• Strong drive and a track record of exceeding expectations.
• Professional written and spoken English.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
• Self‑motivation, curiosity, flexibility and accountability.
• Willingness to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).

Required skills

• Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
• Passion for embedded systems software (kernel, graphics, Yocto).
• Proficiency in at least one language: Golang, C, C++ or Rust.
