Linux Devices Software Engineer (Hardware‑Centric Linux QA)

About the role

Canonical is looking for a Linux Devices Software Engineer to help deliver Ubuntu on cutting‑edge IoT and server hardware. You will work remotely from Kampala while collaborating with globally distributed teams and travelling for company events.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain device‑oriented software stacks using the latest Linux kernel and open‑source tools.
• Build and optimise Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server images for silicon‑specific capabilities.
• Write high‑quality, well‑designed code in Golang, C, C++ or Rust.
• Debug complex issues, provide fixes, and contribute to technical documentation.
• Lead technical discussions and act as a technical lead on end‑to‑end customer engagements from cloud to edge.
• Collaborate proactively with internal and external communities and help customers ship their applications and SDKs on Ubuntu.
• Participate in global travel (2‑4 weeks per year) for company events.

Required profile

• Exceptional academic record from high school through university.
• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM or a compelling alternative path.
• Strong passion for Linux, embedded systems and open‑source technologies.
• Professional written and spoken English.
• Self‑motivated, result‑oriented and able to meet commitments.
• Willingness to travel twice a year for up to two weeks each.

Required skills

• Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) experience.
• Proficiency in at least one language: Golang, C, C++ or Rust.
• Familiarity with embedded Linux toolchains such as Yocto.
• Kernel or graphics development knowledge.
