About the role
Join Canonical’s Silicon Software and Optimisation team to work on the latest Linux kernel and open‑source technologies. You will help deliver Ubuntu for cutting‑edge IoT and server‑class hardware, building and maintaining device‑focused software stacks while collaborating with globally distributed teams.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and optimise Ubuntu for new IoT and server platforms.
- Integrate, maintain and debug device‑oriented software stacks.
- Write high‑quality, well‑designed code in C, C++, Go or Rust.
- Build device OS images using Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server.
- Optimise the Linux kernel and libraries for silicon‑specific capabilities.
- Provide technical leadership internally and within external open‑source communities.
- Assist customers in shipping their applications and SDKs on Ubuntu.
- Contribute to technical documentation and collaborate on solution design.
- Act as technical lead on complex customer engagements spanning cloud to edge.
- Travel 2–4 weeks per year for company events and customer visits.
Required profile
- Exceptional academic record from high school through university.
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM or a compelling alternative path.
- Passion for Linux, embedded systems and open‑source software.
- Professional written and spoken English.
- Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility and accountability.
- Self‑motivation and ability to meet commitments.
- Willingness to travel twice a year for up to two weeks each time.
Required skills
- Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
- Familiarity with embedded systems tooling such as Yocto.
- Proficiency in at least one language: Golang, C, C++ or Rust.
- Ability to debug kernel, graphics or hardware‑related issues.
- Experience building and optimising OS images for devices.
