Editor – Independent Digital Media

About the role

The Editor will lead the editorial process from concept to publication, ensuring every piece aligns with Homeless X Media’s mission of independent, unfiltered storytelling. This full‑time, on‑site role in Kampala works closely with writers, photographers, digital producers and community partners to deliver accurate, engaging content.

Key responsibilities

• Review, edit and proofread articles for clarity, accuracy and consistency.
• Verify facts, sources and ensure ethical reporting standards.
• Maintain style and tone guidelines across all content.
• Manage the content calendar and coordinate coverage of local and community‑focused stories.
• Provide constructive feedback to writers and contributors.
• Develop and update editorial guidelines.
• Support audience engagement through clear, accessible content.

Required profile

• Strong editing and proofreading abilities with a focus on clarity and accuracy.
• Proficiency in journalistic writing, story development and headline crafting.
• Experience in fact‑checking, source verification and ethical reporting, especially for community and human‑interest stories.
• Demonstrated ability to manage editorial workflows, deadlines and collaboration with diverse contributors.
• Solid understanding of digital media publishing tools and basic SEO principles.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies or equivalent practical experience.
• Commitment to independent media and community‑centered storytelling; experience with East African or Kampala‑based communities is a plus.
