Legal Officer

About the role

Old Mutual is hiring a Legal Officer in Kampala to support the mitigation of legal liability and third-party claims, provide company secretarial support and deliver in-house legal advisory services. The role also covers anti-money laundering (AML) compliance, including identifying and escalating breaches to the Risk and Compliance Office.

Key responsibilities

• Draft and review contracts, leases and other legal documents, and negotiate out-of-court settlements with third parties
• Reduce litigation costs through in-house negotiation and settlements, and improve customer relations at the IRA Complaints Bureau
• Ensure claims are registered and acknowledged promptly, with timely recoveries and compliance with QOP and ISO 9001
• Support the company secretariat with Board papers, governance functions and Board secretariat services
• Carry out research and prepare reports and legal opinions on legal issues, and recommend process and risk improvements
• Monitor contractual, policy and regulatory compliance, and advise on adequate reserves reflecting the company's liability
• Handle conveyancing matters and monitor that external counsel reports quarterly

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in law (LLB)
• Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice
• Advocate of the High Court of Uganda
• ICSA membership (an added advantage)
• 3 years of experience in legal practice
