Project Coordinator for TB Clinical Trial (PhD opportunity)

About the role

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University seeks a motivated Project Coordinator to lead day‑to‑day operations of the RECENT TB study, a large‑scale randomized trial in Uganda and South Africa. This position is combined with enrollment in a PhD programme, allowing the candidate to use trial data for a doctoral thesis.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee participant recruitment, randomisation, follow‑up and data collection in line with the protocol, GCP and EDCTP regulations.
• Manage electronic data capture (EDC) systems, ensuring accurate entry, verification and reporting of trial data.
• Train and coordinate study nurses, health‑facility staff and community health workers across both countries; travel to South Africa as required.
• Maintain up‑to‑date study documentation, support monitoring visits, audits and regulatory submissions.
• Prepare study reports, safety updates and interim analyses for DSMB and funders.
• Develop and submit a PhD research proposal, conduct doctoral research and write the thesis within the contract period.

Required profile

• Relevant university degree (e.g., public health, medicine, epidemiology) and eligibility to enrol in a PhD programme at Makerere University or partner institution.
• Experience in clinical trial coordination or research project management.
• Strong understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and regulatory requirements.
• Excellent organisational, communication and teamwork skills.
