Senior Gender Scientist

About the role

The Senior Gender Scientist will provide scientific guidance, ensure research concepts and methods meet the highest scientific standards, and lead gender‑focused natural resource management research at the World Agroforestry Centre.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance ensuring research concepts and methods are appropriate and of high quality.
• Collaborate closely with theme coordinators and leaders to define and implement research activities.
• Write, supervise and disseminate publications and other scientific communications.
• Lead and supervise project capacity‑building initiatives.
• Supervise students and staff, mentoring junior project scientists.
• Represent CIFOR in national, regional and global forums related to forest governance.
• Develop and maintain constructive partnerships with stakeholders.
• Lead the search for additional funding in relevant research areas.
• Plan and monitor research activities, including financing.
• Lead, coordinate and contribute to donor reporting.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline.
• Experience in collaborative natural resource management or social‑science research.
• Ability to manage multiple projects across regions and continents.
• Proven experience developing and managing project budgets.
• Strong record of peer‑reviewed publications.
• Demonstrated experience in resource mobilisation, fundraising and proposal development.
• Capability to provide conceptual leadership in fundraising and a track record of obtaining donor funding.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Effective experience working with multiple partners and conducting fieldwork in developing countries.
• Experience in multicultural and multidisciplinary research teams.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, valuing information sharing and continuous improvement.
