Senior Scientist – Landscape Ecology

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is seeking a senior scientist to lead landscape‑ecology research that supports sustainable forest governance and natural‑resource management across Africa. The role combines scientific leadership, project coordination and capacity‑building activities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance ensuring research concepts and methods meet the highest standards and reflect up‑to‑date scientific approaches.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators and CIFOR partners to define and implement emerging research activities.
• Write, supervise and disseminate scientific publications and other communications.
• Lead and supervise project capacity‑building initiatives, mentoring junior scientists and supervising students.
• Represent CIFOR in national, regional and global forums on forest governance.
• Develop and maintain constructive partnerships with stakeholders.
• Identify and secure additional research funding and lead donor reporting.
• Plan, monitor and manage research activities, including budgeting and financial oversight.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., ecology, environmental science, social science).
• Proven experience in collaborative natural‑resource management or social‑science research, including multi‑country projects.
• Successful track record in developing and managing project budgets and obtaining donor funding.
• Strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Demonstrated experience in resource mobilisation, proposal development and fundraising.

Required skills

• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) are an advantage.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams.
