Agronomist (Hass Avocado/Macadamia)

About the role

A client of Summit Recruitment & Search, an agribusiness based in Mityana District, Uganda, specialising in Hass avocado and macadamia production, is hiring an experienced Agronomist. The role covers crop science and agronomic practices across both orchards and requires daily presence in the field, working closely with the field supervisor and coordinating with the Farm Operations Lead and the CEO.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement seasonal agronomic programmes for avocado and macadamia orchards, covering nutrition, pest and disease control, pruning and orchard hygiene.
• Carry out regular block-by-block scouting to monitor tree health, pest and disease pressure and crop development stages.
• Track and report flowering, fruit set, retention and overall crop performance consistently.
• Coordinate irrigation and fertigation schedules according to crop nutritional needs at each growth stage.
• Record all field activities, including chemical and fertiliser applications, in the farm management system.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of inputs such as fertilisers, crop protection and foliar feeds and link them to field outcomes.
• Track KPIs per block (pest/disease levels, fruit set, fruit size and quality) and recommend adjustments where needed.
• Maintain compliance with export and certification standards, including GlobalG.A.P., and keep documentation ready for audits.
• Plan inputs in advance, track inventory and stay within budget.
• Work with the field supervisor and Farm Operations Lead to deploy labour effectively.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Crop Science or a related field preferred; hands-on experience also considered.
• Demonstrated experience with GlobalG.A.P. standards and accurate record keeping for export compliance.
• Good understanding of packhouse operations and post-harvest quality.
• Strong field scouting and diagnostic ability, able to identify pests and diseases early.
• Commercially minded, with a practical understanding of input costs.

• Able to produce clear, structured reports understandable by non-technical stakeholders.
