Anesthetic Officer – Full‑time Fixed‑Term

About the role

The Anesthetic Officer will provide safe, patient‑centred anaesthetic care for both emergency and elective paediatric surgeries at CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda. This full‑time, fixed‑term position involves pre‑operative assessment, intra‑operative management and post‑operative follow‑up.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive pre‑anaesthetic assessments, including history, examination and risk evaluation.
• Prepare and verify anaesthesia machines, monitoring equipment, oxygen supply and emergency drugs before each case.
• Administer and monitor general anaesthesia throughout induction, maintenance and emergence.
• Perform airway management techniques such as mask ventilation, laryngoscopy, endotracheal intubation and supraglottic airway insertion.
• Manage intravenous fluids, blood products and haemodynamic stability, respecting paediatric physiological requirements.
• Assist with or perform regional anaesthesia techniques within institutional guidelines.
• Identify, prevent and manage peri‑operative complications and emergencies.
• Facilitate safe transfer to PACU or ICU with thorough handover.
• Document all anaesthetic care accurately in line with regulatory standards.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in providing anaesthetic care, preferably in a paediatric setting.
• Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality and ethical practice.
• Willingness to participate in departmental devotional activities.
• Ability to work independently under the supervision of an anaesthesiologist.

Required skills

• Airway management (mask ventilation, laryngoscopy, intubation, LMA).
• General anaesthesia administration and monitoring.
• Regional anaesthesia techniques.
• Patient physiological monitoring and data interpretation.
• Intravenous fluid and blood product management.
• Peri‑operative risk assessment and documentation.
