Driver/Operator – Firefighting Apparatus

About the role

The Driver/Operator is a fully trained member of the firefighting team, responsible for safely operating fire‑fighting apparatus and related equipment to protect life and property. This position supports a US Navy program on Diego Garcia and follows international, US, Air Force and PWS requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Drive firefighting apparatus to and from emergencies, complying with all laws and regulations.
• Operate pumps, power units and other mechanical equipment during fire‑fighting operations.
• Maintain inventory of tools and equipment on the apparatus and perform post‑incident checks.
• Clean, service and conduct routine inspections of the apparatus to ensure readiness.
• Document and report mechanical failures, missing or damaged equipment, and complete required paperwork.
• Perform weekly maintenance, cleaning duties and inventory inspections without direct supervision.

Required profile

• Minimum three years of relevant experience, preferably at a US Military Installation (Air Force preferred).
• Experience working in an austere OCONUS environment with a multinational workforce.
• Excellent organizational, time‑management and customer‑service abilities.
• Ability to pass contract medical requirements and maintain them for the deployment duration.
• Valid driver’s license, passport and, if required, appropriate visa and facility credentials.

Required skills

• ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting) driver/operator certification.
• Pumper operation certification.
• Firefighter I and Firefighter II qualifications.
• Airport Firefighter certification.
• HAZMAT Operations certification.
• Telecommunicator I and Telecommunicator II certifications.
