Epidemiologist

About the role

The Infectious Disease Institute is seeking an experienced Epidemiologist to lead surveillance activities across multiple pillars in Kampala, Uganda. The role involves technical leadership, data analysis, and coordination with national and cross‑border health authorities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for all seven surveillance sub‑pillars, including alert management, case investigation, contact tracing, and mortality surveillance.
• Coordinate active case search, community‑based and facility‑based surveillance, and points of entry screening.
• Analyze surveillance and connectivity data to identify trends, hotspots, and cross‑border transmission risks.
• Prepare and disseminate daily/weekly epidemiological reports, situation reports, and ensure data entry into national systems such as DHIS2 and eIDSR.
• Represent the project at regional coordination meetings and support preparedness, risk communication, and after‑action reviews.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, or related field; Master’s degree in Epidemiology or Public Health strongly preferred.
• 3–5 years of experience in disease surveillance, outbreak response, or field epidemiology.
• Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) certification is an advantage.
• Experience working with Ministry of Health structures and cross‑border health programs.

Required skills

• Proficiency with epidemiological analysis tools such as Epi Info, STATA, and R.
• Experience using health information systems, particularly DHIS2.
