About the role
International Medical Corps seeks a board‑certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon to join its Emergency Response Team (ERT) in Kamwokya, Uganda. The surgeon will deliver life‑saving and limb‑saving surgical care in conflict‑affected, disaster‑prone, or low‑resource environments, focusing on trauma, burns, infection and complex soft‑tissue reconstruction. The role also contributes to building sustainable surgical systems and local capacity through protocol development and task‑sharing.
Key responsibilities
- Perform emergency and elective reconstructive procedures, including trauma reconstruction, burn excision and coverage, and complex wound management.
- Apply damage‑control and staged reconstruction principles for unstable patients with limited resources.
- Manage peri‑operative and post‑operative care with strong emphasis on infection prevention and complication mitigation.
- Participate in triage and prioritisation during mass‑casualty or surge events.
- Train, mentor and supervise local surgeons, residents, nurses and allied staff, and develop locally appropriate surgical protocols.
- Collaborate with anesthesia, nursing, rehabilitation, logistics and leadership teams, adapting surgical plans to available infrastructure and supplies.
Required profile
- Board‑certified Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon.
- Demonstrated experience in trauma, burns, infection and soft‑tissue reconstruction in resource‑limited settings.
- Proven ability to teach and mentor across cultures and training levels.
- High adaptability, resilience and collaborative mindset.
