Job description
About the role
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is hiring a Protection Officer-1 in Yumbe to lead the day-to-day delivery and quality of ReSET's protection component in the assigned settlement. The role makes protection the entry point and safeguard of the cash-plus model: households are screened for protection risks at first contact, protection overrides are applied where lives, safety or dignity are at risk, survivors and at-risk individuals receive safe, confidential, survivor-centred case management, and every referral is followed through. The officer also leads protection monitoring and community-based protection.
Key responsibilities
- Lead protection activities in the settlement and give technical support to the protection team, including case workers and community volunteers
- Ensure quality of planning, implementation and follow-up of protection activities, including integrated protection screening, case management, monitoring and referrals
- Keep cash and protection aligned as one client journey, with protection overrides and cash-linked support applied safely
- Build good relations with forcibly displaced and stateless persons, host communities, RLOs, partners, government and other humanitarian actors
- Monitor protection risks, document case studies and best practices, and develop mitigation strategies for protection challenges
- Apply integrated protection screening and support vulnerability assessments, household verification and the placement of households in assistance packages, including Package B
- Oversee child protection case management, including unaccompanied and separated children, and coordinate with TPO Uganda and UGANET for MHPSS, legal aid and housing, land and property support
- Hold multidisciplinary case conferences for complex cases and escalate high-risk cases immediately
- Support community-based protection, including risk assessments, safety audits, awareness campaigns and capacity building of RWCs, community committees and women's and youth groups
- Maintain service directories and referral pathways, ensure referrals are closed loop, and flag referral failures and service gaps
- Uphold safeguarding policies, accountability to affected populations and the GEDSI approach, and ensure informed consent, confidentiality and data protection
