Risk Communication and Community Engagement Officer

About the role

The World Health Organization is seeking a Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) Officer (National UN Volunteer – Expert) to support Ebola preparedness and response in Uganda. Based in Kampala, the officer will work with national and district teams to mobilise communities, manage rumors, and coordinate communication interventions throughout the emergency cycle.

Key responsibilities

• Support development, review and implementation of district and national RCCE preparedness and response plans.
• Provide technical assistance to National Task Forces and District Health Teams on RCCE strategies.
• Strengthen community engagement structures at village, parish, sub‑county, district and national levels.
• Map and engage key community influencers such as religious leaders, cultural leaders and traditional healers.
• Facilitate orientation and capacity‑building activities for schools, community groups and security agencies.
• Identify and use effective communication channels (radio, community audio systems, mobile outreach, local media) to disseminate accurate Ebola prevention messages.
• Coordinate distribution of IEC materials and promote community understanding of disease prevention and early detection.
• Collaborate with surveillance teams to improve early detection, reporting and referral of suspected cases and establish community feedback mechanisms.
