Linux Devices Software Engineer – Networking (Switching, Routing, SmartNICs)

About the role

Join Canonical’s engineering team to build and optimise Ubuntu for the latest IoT and server‑class hardware. You will work on device‑oriented software stacks, contribute to the Linux kernel, and help customers ship their applications on Ubuntu.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain device‑focused software stacks on Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server.
• Integrate and optimise the Linux kernel and libraries for silicon‑specific capabilities.
• Write high‑quality, well‑designed code in Golang, C, C++ or Rust.
• Collaborate with globally distributed teams and provide technical leadership.
• Assist customers in deploying apps and SDKs on Ubuntu devices.
• Debug complex issues and produce robust fixes.
• Contribute to technical documentation and share knowledge within external communities.
• Lead complex customer engagements covering cloud‑to‑edge architectures.
• Work primarily from home with occasional travel for company events (2‑4 weeks per year).

Required profile

• Strong academic record in high school and university.
• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM or a compelling alternative pathway.
• Passion for Linux, embedded systems and open‑source technologies.
• Fluency in professional written and spoken English.
• Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
• Self‑motivated, result‑oriented and able to meet commitments.
• Willingness to travel twice a year for up to two weeks each.
