About the role
The World Health Organization is recruiting a Tobacco Surveillance Officer to support regional tobacco control, health promotion and disease‑prevention initiatives across the WHO African Region. The position will coordinate the Global Tobacco Surveillance System, assist with alcohol and sugar‑sweetened beverage surveys, and strengthen evidence generation for Member States.
Key responsibilities
- Provide technical support to Member States for planning and implementing youth and adult tobacco surveys, including methodology design and tool development.
- Strengthen surveillance systems to monitor tobacco use, emerging nicotine products and support data collection for alcohol and SSB surveys.
- Assist Member States in analysing surveillance data, develop dissemination mechanisms, contribute to WHO Global Reports and support research, manuscript preparation and publication.
- Support regional tobacco‑control policy analysis, develop technical products (reports, factsheets, guidance, advocacy materials) and monitor programme performance.
- Participate in technical working groups, coordinate with governments, WHO country offices and development partners, and prepare technical and administrative reports.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Public Health, Epidemiology or a related field (advanced qualifications desirable).
- Minimum three years of professional experience in public health, epidemiology, public policy or socio‑economic development, including managing or analysing public‑health data and surveillance systems.
- Fluent in English and French.
