About the role
Our client, an agribusiness based in Mityana District, Uganda, specializing in Hass avocado and macadamia production, is seeking an experienced Agronomist. The role involves overseeing crop science and agronomic practices across both orchards, requiring daily field presence and close collaboration with the field supervisor, Farm Operations Lead, and CEO to maximise crop performance and farm productivity.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement seasonal agronomic programmes for avocado and macadamia orchards, covering nutrition, pest and disease control, pruning and orchard hygiene.
- Conduct regular block‑by‑block scouting to monitor tree health, pest and disease pressure and crop development stages.
- Track and report flowering, fruit set, retention and overall crop performance across all orchard blocks.
- Coordinate irrigation and fertigation schedules to match nutritional needs at each growth stage.
- Maintain accurate records of all field activities, including chemical and fertilizer applications, in the farm management system.
- Monitor effectiveness of input programmes (fertilisers, crop protection, foliar feeds) and link applications to observable outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with GlobalG.A.P., export and local certification standards, keeping documentation audit‑ready.
- Plan input requirements, manage budgets and inventory, and coordinate labour deployment with the field supervisor and Farm Operations Lead.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Crop Science or related field, or equivalent hands‑on experience.
- Demonstrated experience with GlobalG.A.P. standards and export‑compliance record‑keeping.
- Good understanding of packhouse operations and post‑harvest quality impact.
- Strong field scouting and diagnostic ability to identify pest and disease issues early.
- Comfortable using digital farm management and reporting systems with consistent data input.
- Ability to produce clear, structured reports for non‑technical stakeholders.
- Commercially minded with practical understanding of input costs and linking expenditure to measurable results.
