Marine Machinist

About the role

Amentum is recruiting a full-time Marine Machinist based in Kampala, Kamwokya. The role covers operating machine tools, fabricating and repairing marine parts, maintaining marine machinery and supporting installation and overhaul of mechanical systems.

Key responsibilities

• Operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines and grinders, and machine, fabricate, repair and modify parts for marine systems.
• Perform alignment, installation, repair and maintenance of marine machinery including pumps, valves, engines, gear mechanisms and hydraulic systems.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical drawings and equipment manuals.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair mechanical issues on marine vessels and equipment.
• Assist with installation and overhaul of mechanical systems according to technical specifications and procedures.
• Use precision measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers and gauges, and carry out routine inspections and preventive maintenance.
• Maintain accurate records of work, parts used, inspections and maintenance, and follow safety standards and regulations.
• Collaborate with maintenance and marine personnel and keep the work area safe and organised.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; 1-3 years of experience as a Marine Machinist or in a related mechanical trade.
• Valid passport, valid for at least one year at hiring, and ability to obtain country-specific visas and facility credentials.
• Ability to read, speak and understand English well enough to perform the contract and comply with emergency procedures.
• Preferred: prior experience in an austere OCONUS environment with a multi-national workforce, a valid driver's licence, and certification or training in machining or marine systems.

Required skills

• Proficiency with machine tools (lathes, grinders, milling machines)
• Experience diagnosing and repairing marine machinery and reading technical drawings
• Knowledge of mechanical systems, precision machining and maintenance practices
• Preferred: hydraulics, pneumatics and precision alignment tools
