Senior Scientist - Silviculture

About the role

World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is recruiting a Senior Scientist in Silviculture in Kampala, Uganda. The role provides scientific guidance on silviculture research, collaborates with CIFOR theme coordinators and leaders, and leads research activities, publications and capacity building.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance so that research concepts and methods meet high scientific standards and reflect up-to-date methods.
• Collaborate with CIFOR theme coordinators and leaders to define and implement research in emerging interest areas.
• Write and supervise publications and other scientific communications.
• Lead or supervise project capacity-building initiatives and mentor junior project scientists.
• Represent CIFOR in national, regional and global forums on forest governance when appropriate.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with stakeholders.
• Lead the search for additional funding and plan and monitor research activities, including financing.
• Lead, coordinate or contribute to donor reporting.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline.
• Experience in collaborative natural resource management or social science research.
• Publications record, especially in peer-reviewed publications, is required.
• Demonstrated experience in resource mobilization, fundraising and proposal writing; scientist positions also need conceptual leadership in fundraising and a track record of securing donor funding.
• Fluent spoken and written English; an international language is an advantage.
• Experience working with multiple partners and in multicultural, multidisciplinary research teams, including research and fieldwork in developing countries.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

More senior positions require the ability to manage projects simultaneously, expertise across regions and countries, and experience developing budgets; scientist positions require budget management on multiple projects.
