Ubuntu Linux Kernel Engineer - BIOS/Firmware

About the role

Canonical, behind Ubuntu Linux, is expanding its investment in PC platform stability, reliability and performance. Its Kernel Team, which builds, maintains and distributes the Linux kernel for Ubuntu, is looking for someone to own aspects of the boot process, BIOS, UEFI, ACPI and other platform firmware components. The role is remote and based in the APAC region.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed team.
• Work with the PC platform enablement team and vendors to resolve BIOS, UEFI, ACPI and other boot and configuration issues.
• Become a primary contributor and maintainer of the Firmware Test Suite (FWTS).
• Improve tooling and automation for verifying Ubuntu Linux on x86 platforms.
• Submit, review and apply kernel patches with internal and external upstream maintainers.

• Effective written and spoken English.
• Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events of up to two weeks.

Required skills

• Strong C programming and a demonstrated software development background in UEFI and/or ACPI, with in-depth knowledge of AML.
• Solid git background and familiarity with the x86 bootstrap process.
• Understanding of kernel fundamentals, with a focus on ACPI and UEFI interaction.
• Nice to have: Python and Bash scripting, coreboot experience, Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging, kernel patching and debugging, and familiarity with Devicetree, SystemReady, u-boot or other non-x86 boot mechanisms.
