Director of People and Culture – Uganda

About the role

The Director of People and Culture in Uganda will join the senior leadership team to design and operate people systems that enable high‑impact programming. Reporting to the Country Director and collaborating with the global People and Culture team, this full‑time, on‑site role is based in Mbale.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for all people‑related matters across the Uganda country program.
• Act as a trusted advisor to the Country Director and management team on workforce strategy, performance, culture, risk management and compliance.
• Translate global People and Culture policies into locally relevant, legally compliant practices.
• Lead, mentor and develop the Uganda People and Culture team, building functional capacity.
• Oversee talent acquisition, performance management, learning and development, and employee relations.
• Ensure operational excellence and adherence to Ugandan labour laws and organizational policies.

Required profile

• Executive‑level HR experience with at least 12 years of progressive responsibility.
• Proven ability to lead people functions in an NGO or nonprofit environment.
• Strong knowledge of Ugandan labour legislation and compliance requirements.
• Demonstrated strategic thinking, organizational design and change‑management skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management capabilities.
