Legal Officer

About the role

Old Mutual is hiring a Legal Officer to mitigate legal liability and third-party claims, reduce the company's risk and exposure, provide company secretarial support and deliver in-house legal advisory services. The role also covers anti-money laundering (AML) compliance, including identifying and escalating breaches to the Risk and Compliance Office.

Key responsibilities

• Draft and review contracts, leases and other legal documents; maintain up-to-date contracts and SLAs for service providers
• Negotiate settlements and handle litigation and claims, keeping external counsel informed and reporting their status quarterly
• Reduce litigation costs, customer complaints at the IRA Complaints Bureau and improve claim recovery timelines
• Support the company secretariat with Board and governance functions and Board papers
• Carry out research and prepare reports and legal opinions on legal issues, and recommend process improvements
• Monitor contractual, policy and regulatory compliance and adequacy of reserves
• Take part in policy formulation, commercial negotiations and AML monitoring

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in law (LLB)
• Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice
• Advocate of the High Court of Uganda
• ICSA membership (an added advantage)
• 3 years of legal practice experience

• Basic computer skills and ability to work with minimal supervision
• Ability to meet deadlines and prioritise tasks
