Senior Agronomist – Barley R&D & Extension Lead

About the role

The Senior Agronomist will lead barley research and development trials, turning scientific insights into scalable farmer practices while overseeing regional agronomy activities. This role also serves as a pipeline to the Uganda Team Leader position.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute variety trials, demo plots, and protocol development trials.
• Generate insights, codify best practices, and translate results into farmer training content.
• Partner with zone research specialists, global barley innovation teams, and third‑party partners on variety development.
• Identify constraints and implement interventions to improve yield, quality, and cost per ton.
• Deliver technical training, field visits, and demo plot coaching to farmers.
• Execute regional production plans, including seed/input planning, planting alignment, crop monitoring, and pre‑harvest estimates.
• Ensure high‑quality data capture for production and sustainability reporting (e.g., SCFE 2030).
• Manage relationships with aggregators, agents, community leaders, and lead farmers; oversee third‑party resources against SLAs.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives and build leadership capability for future team‑leadership roles.

Required profile

• Strong applied agronomy background with experience in field trial design.
• Data‑driven decision‑making and disciplined planning/reporting.
• Proven ability to influence and train farmers at scale.
• Excellent stakeholder management across informal and formal networks.
• High ownership, proactive attitude, and execution focus.
