On‑call Paraveterinary Assistant (Poultry)

About the role

SmartVet Africa is looking for part‑time, on‑call Paraveterinary Assistants to work directly with smallholder poultry farmers in Gulu. You will respond quickly to farmer alerts, travel to farms, assess bird health and apply vaccines or treatments according to SmartVet protocols.

Key responsibilities

• Receive and triage farmer alerts via the SmartVet mobile app or SMS.
• Travel to farms across Gulu and surrounding areas to assess poultry health.
• Administer vaccines and treatments following established protocols.
• Document each case in the SmartVet system, updating health records and stock levels.
• Educate farmers on disease prevention, biosecurity measures and proper flock management.
• Maintain and prepare vaccine stocks and equipment for rapid deployment.
• Collaborate with supervising veterinarians and attend regular training sessions.

Required profile

• Formal training in animal health or veterinary sciences (paraveterinary certificate, diploma in animal production and health, or related field).
• Practical experience with poultry disease recognition, vaccination and treatment.
• Ability to use mobile phones or apps for data entry and communication.
• Strong reliability for on‑call work, including evenings and weekends.
• Fluency in English and local languages spoken in Northern Uganda.
