Senior Epidemiologist – GUARD Project

About the role

The Epidemiologist will act as a senior technical contributor and subject‑matter expert for the GUARD project, providing epidemiological support to strengthen alert‑to‑action and outbreak containment across priority countries. Reporting to the Technical Director, the role focuses on infectious‑disease surveillance, high‑consequence disease readiness, screening, triage, safe isolation, referral pathways and frontline provider protection during emergencies.

Key responsibilities

• Update, implement and strengthen event‑based, indicator‑based and community‑based surveillance systems within national frameworks.
• Standardise case definitions, reporting forms and data‑flow mechanisms to ensure timely, accurate information sharing.
• Develop and operationalise screening and triage protocols at points of entry, health facilities and community settings.
• Analyse surveillance data to detect signals, map transmission dynamics, identify hotspots and produce epidemiological intelligence briefs for rapid response.
• Support rapid outbreak investigations, including case finding, contact tracing, line‑listing and descriptive epidemiological analyses.
• Conduct epidemiological assessments and situation analyses during alert and response phases.
• Update safe isolation protocols, referral pathways and patient‑flow mechanisms in collaboration with clinical teams.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a senior epidemiology professional supporting infectious‑disease surveillance and outbreak response.
• Demonstrated ability to work with national and sub‑national health authorities and multi‑country consortium partners.
• Strong analytical skills for interpreting surveillance data and producing actionable intelligence.
• Experience designing, adapting and delivering training and mentorship on technical tools.
• Capacity to operate within a 24–72‑hour response window and to provide guidance under pressure.
