About the role

National Robotics Engineering Center is seeking a senior software engineer to develop and maintain software that powers advanced robotic systems. You will work with multidisciplinary teams to design, build, and deploy sophisticated solutions for industrial, commercial, and government applications. The role offers the opportunity to lead technical initiatives and mentor junior engineers.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop, document, test, troubleshoot, and maintain core software applications and integrated systems for robotic platforms.
  • Drive high‑level software architecture, data pipelines, and system requirements while balancing scalability and hardware constraints.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware engineers, UI/UX developers, product leads, and external sponsors to translate operational needs into technical specifications.
  • Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers through code reviews and technical guidance.
  • Build and maintain development tools, CI/CD pipelines, logging/telemetry, and network communication protocols for real‑time robotic systems.
  • Research modern literature, benchmark open‑source packages, and prototype state‑of‑the‑art techniques in C++ and Python.
  • Lead testing across the full lifecycle, from unit tests and simulation to hands‑on hardware validation, and provide field support.

Required profile

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent with 5+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong mastery of modern C++ in a Linux environment and proven ability to design clean, maintainable system architectures.
  • High proficiency in Python for data analysis, automation, and rapid prototyping.
  • Experience with network protocols, inter‑process communication, hardware driver integration, or real‑time data streaming.
  • Excellent technical communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity with software engineering for cyber‑physical systems, including sensor integration and basic computer vision concepts.
  • Deep knowledge of Git workflows, code reviews, automated testing frameworks, and bug‑tracking systems.
