Social and Environmental Safeguards Officer

About the role

The Social and Environmental Safeguards Officer will support UNDP Uganda’s implementation of its Country Programme (2026‑2030) by ensuring that all programmes and projects comply with UNDP’s social and environmental safeguard policies. The role contributes to Uganda’s Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on climate‑resilient development, natural resource management and inclusive growth.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and monitor social and environmental risks associated with UNDP‑funded projects.
• Provide guidance to project teams on safeguard compliance, mitigation measures and reporting requirements.
• Conduct field visits, inspections and stakeholder consultations to verify adherence to safeguard standards.
• Prepare safeguard assessment reports, data analyses and recommendations for corrective actions.
• Support capacity‑building activities for UNDP staff, government partners and local communities on safeguard procedures.
• Collaborate with the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources portfolio and other UN agencies to align safeguard actions with national policies.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in environmental science, social sciences, development studies or a related field.
• Relevant professional experience in social and environmental safeguard assessment, preferably within UN or donor‑funded programmes.
• Knowledge of UNDP safeguard policies, national environmental legislation and international best practices.
• Strong analytical and report‑writing abilities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
