Surgical Skills Laboratory Technician

About the role

The Department of Surgery at Makerere University is seeking a skilled Technician to manage its skills laboratory. The role involves supporting practical training, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Set up and manage the skills laboratory for various training sessions, avoiding schedule conflicts.
• Clean, care for, calibrate and test laboratory equipment.
• Generate reports, inventories, orders and budgets for the unit.
• Prepare and supervise students’ practicals and support academic staff.
• Implement and maintain quality‑assurance, safety guidelines and mentor junior staff.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in nursing, midwifery, operation theatre technology, surgical technology, biology, chemistry or exercise science.
• At least 3 years (36 months) of relevant work experience, preferably in an operating room or skills laboratory.
• Age must not exceed 55 years at the time of application.

Required skills

• Laboratory equipment operation and calibration.
• Generation of reports, inventories and budgeting using computers.
• Proficiency with machines and computer software for laboratory management.
