About the role
The World Health Organization is seeking a Tobacco Surveillance Officer to join its Health Promotion, Social Determinants, Equity, Tobacco Control, Risk Communication and Community Engagement Programme in Kampala, Uganda. The role will coordinate tobacco surveillance activities, support related surveys, and strengthen evidence‑informed tobacco control across Member States.
Key responsibilities
- Provide technical support to Member States for planning and implementing youth and adult tobacco surveys.
- Design survey tools, protocols and systematic surveillance mechanisms for monitoring tobacco use, including emerging products.
- Assist Member States in collecting data on alcohol and sugar‑sweetened beverages for global reporting.
- Analyse survey data and develop effective dissemination mechanisms.
- Collect and validate data for WHO global reports on the tobacco epidemic.
- Conduct regional tobacco‑control policy and data analysis.
- Develop technical materials such as progress reports, fact sheets, presentations, guides, tools and advocacy materials.
- Contribute to manuscripts documenting project lessons and participate in technical working groups.
Required profile
- Minimum three years of professional experience in public health, epidemiology, public policy or socio‑economic development at national or international level.
- Experience managing or working with public health data related to risk factors, health outcomes and health policies.
- Strong knowledge of public health surveillance, data analysis methodologies and global tobacco‑control strategies (WHO FCTC, MPOWER).
- Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Public Health, Epidemiology or related field; advanced degree desirable.
- Fluent in English and French.
